How to Stock Up Without Going Bankrupt.

Alright, witches — let’s get real. Let’s talk about what you actually need to get your magic on, how to MacGyver it if you’re broke, and why you don't need to break the bank or your spirit to make good shit happen.

First things first: Essential oils are NOT mandatory.

Yeah, I said it. You don’t need a $60 tiny bottle of fairy fart oil to be a real witch. You can grab any herb, chili, or what-have-you, toss it in a jar, pour some warmed grapeseed oil or fractionated coconut oil over it, and let that bad boy sit for at least 24 hours. Congratulations — you just made infused oil. Is it fancy? Nope. Is it badass and perfectly usable in spellwork? Absolutely.

Now, if you’re feeling froggy and want to whip up a fancier spell oil, fine — follow the recipe for whatever you're cooking up. For example, my Fast Cash oil? It’s just a bunch of stones and herbs soaking their butts off in coconut oil for 30 days. No essential oils in sight, and it works.

Don’t overthink it.

If you do decide to spring for essential oils, research your damn supplier. Make sure they aren't out there wrecking the environment or screwing over small farmers just to sell you a "pure" oil at triple markup. *serious side eye to those pyramid scheme oil dealers*

Now let’s talk tools:

Sea glass, wire, ribbons, thread, jars, bottles, and basic stones like amethyst or rose quartz — you can hit up Michael’s, or even Etsy. Local witch shops are goldmines too, but I’ll say it louder for the witches in the back: check prices and check quality.

I snagged a giant chunk of rose quartz in the Black Hills for three bucks. The thing's the size of a damn Kleenex box. Meanwhile, some shops are out here trying to sell you a pebble for six bucks. Shop smart, darlings.

Jars and bottles?
Raid your recycling bin. Jelly jars, pasta sauce jars — clean 'em out and boom, you’re ready.
For smaller bottles, hit up Dollar Tree. Five little vials for a buck? Yes, please. Temu and Amazon sometimes have cheap dropper bottles too, if you’re patient and don't mind digging around.

Now, me? I'm full-on crow-core.
I collect random shiny stuff wherever I go — keys, garnets, sea glass, coins, rings — straight off beaches, hiking trails, thrift stores. I even scored a little cauldron at a thrift store in Oregon for two bucks. You gotta be willing to dig, baby, but the treasures are out there.

Coins:
Mercury dimes online? About a buck apiece if you look hard. Older silver quarters (pre-1964) are the real deal for spells, and buffalo nickels and wheat pennies (pre-1980) have a higher copper content and way better energy than the shiny new crap.

Gold coins? Forget it unless you’re rolling in cash. Grab some Chinese gold coins off Etsy — they work beautifully. Sacajawea Dollars? They are gold in color. I just wouldn't try to invoke her help. For me it's a personal thing. Hell, even chocolate coins wrapped in gold foil get the job done if you imbue them right. Witchcraft is 90% intention and 10% looking fabulous.

Roots and funky plants:

  • Bear root = Osha root. Find it online or hit up your local herb shops.

  • Locust thorns? Etsy has 'em, or you can risk your skin gathering from a thorn tree in the wild.

  • Goat heads? They’re mean little suckers. If you’ve got ‘em locally, great — if not, sub with blackberry or rose thorns.

  • High John the Conqueror, Jezebel root, Devil’s Shoestring, Adam and Eve root, Rose of Jericho? All out there online — but again, shop around and read reviews like your life depends on it.

Asian markets and Mercados are where it’s at for herbs and weird goodies like Asafoetida. Seriously, don’t be shy — go explore. It’s a treasure hunt and the prices will blow your mind compared to "spiritual supply" shops that think a small baggie of herbs should cost more than dinner.

Now, if you're hunting the really spicy stuff — snake sheds, dried scorpions, rattlesnake teeth, porcupine quills — check reenactment shops, oddities and curiosities vendors, or mountain man supply stores. I get some of the best snake sheds from a local reptile rescue. I pay for them, but I'm not paying $20 for a 1 inch square. I'm talking about a full grown ass snake. But don't just throw money at the first seller you see. Be picky, be smart, be witchy.

Bottom line:
Magic doesn’t have to be expensive. It’s not about the stuff. It’s about the intention, the energy, the grit, and the heart you bring to it. The best witches I know could hex you sideways with three broken buttons, a ball of lint, and a bad attitude.

So happy hunting, wild ones. Stay scrappy. Stay clever. Stay powerful.
